Week 6: Positive Test
Weeks 5–6 — the phone calls start now
You saw the lines. It's real. Now it's time to make three phone calls: your OB, your insurance company, and whoever you're telling first. This week is about logistics, not emotions (those come later, relentlessly).
What's happening this week
The embryo has a heartbeat. Morning sickness may be starting. She is probably exhausted in a way that seems disproportionate — it's not, growing a human is a full-body project.
Your checklist
0 of 5 completeMost offices schedule the first visit between weeks 8–10. Call now so you get on the calendar. If she doesn't have an OB, ask friends, check insurance network, or use Zocdoc.
Verify: Is the OB in-network? Is the hospital they deliver at in-network? What's your deductible and out-of-pocket max? Does your plan cover NIPT, anatomy scan, epidural? Get a reference number for the call.
Appointments, questions for the doctor, symptoms, cravings, aversions. A shared Google Doc or Apple Notes works. You'll reference it constantly.
She needs them. You don't — but you could take a regular multivitamin in solidarity.
Most couples wait until after the first trimester (week 12–13) to tell widely. You'll probably tell a few people now. That's normal. Just agree together.
Questions to ask your doctor
- When is the first available appointment?
- Do I need a referral from my PCP?
- What should she bring to the first visit?
- Is the practice a single doctor or a rotation?
