Week 4: Before You Knew
Weeks 1–4 — conception through missed period
Most dads don't know yet. Conception happened around week 2, and implantation around week 3–4. If you're reading this retroactively — you're fine. Nobody optimizes weeks 1–4 in real time.
What's happening this week
The fertilized egg implanted into the uterine lining. hCG is rising. She may feel nothing yet, or may already be exhausted and nauseous. A missed period is usually the first real signal.
Your checklist
0 of 3 completeFolic acid is the critical one — 400–800mcg daily. Most prenatals cover it. She should have started before conception ideally, but starting now is perfectly fine.
Zero alcohol. Caffeine under 200mg/day (roughly one 12oz coffee). This applies to her — but solidarity helps.
Had wine at dinner last week? Took ibuprofen? It's fine. The pregnancy is too early for most things to have impact. Your OB will confirm.
