Week 7: Insurance Homework
Verify coverage before the bills start
This is the unsexy week. No appointments, no ultrasounds — just you, a phone, and your insurance company's hold music. Do this now. You'll thank yourself when the EOBs start arriving.
What's happening this week
Baby is forming major organs. Her nausea may be ramping up. She might be exhausted by 7pm every night. This is normal and will likely peak around weeks 8–10.
Your checklist
0 of 6 completeCall the number on the back of the insurance card. Confirm the specific doctor AND the practice/group.
Ask your OB which hospital they deliver at. Then call insurance to confirm that hospital is in-network. Out-of-network hospital bills are the #1 surprise cost in pregnancy.
Pregnancy will likely hit your out-of-pocket max. Know what that number is. If you have an HSA/FSA, start planning contributions.
NIPT (genetic screening) can cost $200–$1000+ depending on coverage. Epidurals are usually covered but confirm. Lactation consultants are often covered under ACA but check your specific plan.
Ask insurance for an estimate. Ask the hospital for a self-pay estimate. Compare. Vaginal delivery averages $5,000–$8,000; C-section $8,000–$15,000 before insurance.
If your employer offers one and you're not enrolled, check if you can start mid-year (qualifying life event). Pre-tax dollars for medical expenses.
