Week 28: Third Trimester Begins
The home stretch — biweekly appointments, kick counts, and preparation mode
Welcome to the third trimester. Appointments are now every two weeks. The baby is viable with excellent survival odds. She is increasingly uncomfortable, and the finish line is in sight. This trimester is all about preparation, endurance, and being ready for game day.
What's happening this week
The baby weighs about 2.2 pounds and can blink, cough, and hiccup. The brain is developing rapidly — billions of neurons are forming. The baby can dream (REM sleep is detectable). Fat stores are building under the skin, smoothing out the wrinkled appearance. She may experience shortness of breath as the uterus presses against the diaphragm.
Your checklist
0 of 5 completePick a time when the baby is usually active (often after dinner). Count 10 movements. It should take less than 2 hours. If you don't reach 10 in 2 hours, call your OB. Consistent movement patterns are reassuring; sudden changes warrant a call.
If you booked a class at week 14, confirm it's coming up. If you haven't booked one, do it now — many classes are 4–6 weeks long and should be completed by week 36. Online options (Tinyhood, The Bump) work in a pinch.
Don't wait until week 39 for this. Install the car seat base now. Read the manual. Watch YouTube tutorials. Then get it inspected at a local fire station or certified inspection station — many offer free checks. The hospital won't let you leave without a properly installed car seat.
Begin a running list: her items (robe, lip balm, nursing bra, going-home outfit), baby items (going-home outfit, car seat, swaddle), your items (change of clothes, phone charger, snacks, toiletries), documents (ID, insurance cards, birth plan, pediatrician contact).
She's carrying 15–25 extra pounds, can't see her feet, and may be having trouble sleeping. Take over more household tasks. Offer foot rubs. Handle the grocery runs. Be proactive — don't wait to be asked.

Car Seat Installation Check
Free car seat inspections are available at most fire stations and police departments. Certified technicians check installation and fit. Find a station at NHTSA.gov. Do this, not just a YouTube video.
The third trimester of pregnancy, spanning weeks 28–40, is the final stretch before delivery. For dads, this is the most action-intensive phase. The baby is viable with a survival rate exceeding 90% at 28 weeks with NICU care. OB visits increase to every two weeks, and then weekly starting at week 36.
Car seat installation is one of the most important tasks to complete early in the third trimester. Studies consistently show that the majority of car seats are installed incorrectly. After installing the seat yourself, get it inspected by a certified car seat technician. Most fire stations and some police departments offer this service for free. The hospital will check for a car seat before discharge — don't make this a last-minute scramble.
